چکیده

A laboratory-scale drum bioreactor system was used to study engineering aspects of soil bioremediation. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were chosen as contaminants in soil. In the operation of the reactor, different mixing strategies were applied according to the size of soil without separate washing of sand. The effect of the water content of the soil mixture on solid mixing time and phenanthrene degradation rate was of particular interest. At 20% water content, which was below the saturation level, the mixing ef®ciency of soil and the degradation rate of phenanthrene was lower than those at 30% or 40% water content. Optimal water content was variable according to the soil texture. The drum bioreactor was operated under optimal water content and PAH concentration ( ̄uorene, phenanthrene, anthracene, pyrene) and microbial numbers were measured in each soil phase (sediment and suspension). Over 95% of PAHs with three or four rings ( ̄uorene, phenanthrene, anthracene, pyrene) were degraded at 270mgkgÿ1 soil within 20 days. The degradation rate of PAHs in the suspension phase was higher than that in sediment phase. # 1999 Society of Chemical Industry

Changes in the contents of selected polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in soils of various types

The aim of the paper was to determine the stability and the decomposition intensity of selected polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (fluorene, anthracene, pyrene, and chrysene) in soils that are under agricultural use. Soil was sampled from the arable layer that is representative of the Kujawy and Pomorze Provinces, which are located in the northwestern part of Poland. The soil samples were pollut...

Degradation of Individual Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) in Soil Polluted with Aircraft Fuel

Degradation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) such as phenanthrene, anthracene, fluoranthene, pyrene, benzo[a]anthracene, chryzene, benzo[b]fluoranthene, benzo[e]pyrene, benzo[k]fluoranthene and benzo[a]pyrene) in the surface layer (5 cm) of soil polluted with aircraft fuel in an amount of 10 ml/kg was analyzed. The direct influence of solubility in water on the degree of its loss was p...

Biodegradation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons by Pseudomonas species

Biodegradation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, toxic compounds widely distributed in the environment by bacteria, is a cheap and safe cleaning up method. The present study attempts to isolate and characterize dioxygenase-producing bacteria which are able to degrade phenanthrene and pyrene from refinery soils. It also aims to assess in vitro biodegradation. To do so, two contaminated soil s...
